Torre do Palácio dos Terenas / Torre da Marca

The Torre do Palácio de Terenas (Palace Tower) was built by order of Pedro de Sem, chancellor of the kingdom from 1336 to 1341. The plant has a rectangular plant and, through the times, its form altered several times.

Capela das Almas / Capela de Santa Catarina

With a great architectonical simplicity, the Almas chapel dates from the beginning of the XVIII, and was repaired and enlarged in 1801. In 1929, the façades were covered with azulejos, by Eduardo Leite, representing the life of São Francisco de Assis and of Santa Catarina. The main façade presents a glass window by the painter Amândio Silva. Inside, the panel painted by Joaquim Rafael, representing the Lord’s Ascension and the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas stand out.

Built in the beginning of the XVIII century (1746-1752) planned by Nicolau Nasoni, this building’s stairs was placed on one of the sides due to the exigencies of the ground plot (too narrow). At the door you can see the blazonry of the order. The windows have iron bars, which is typical of the first half of the XVII century. The house is divided in three floors and an underground, where the cemetery of the brotherhood is.

Casa do Infante / Museu da Cidade

Built in the XIV century, this is a building with various floors and an arcade structure. It has several medieval and Manueline vestiges. The “façade” was enriched with a central single flight stairs. This embellishment, which continues in the large symmetrical openings at the stairs’ centre, seems to be justified by the desire to ennoble the place where the administrative functions were performed.

Forte de São Francisco Xavier / Castelo do Queijo

Built in 1662, in a place called “do Queijo”, to protect the city from the Spanish Fleet. Surrounded by a moat, it presents watch-boxes at the corners. Inside it is the governor’s residence at the time and a chapel. Nowadays it is the stage for many temporary exhibitions.

Capela do Senhor dos Passos

The Senhor dos Passos Chapel is from the end of the XVIII century. It presents an arch rounded portal, which occupies almost all the north front. Inside, it is covered with blue and white azulejos (tiles).

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Esperança / Edifício e Igreja do Recolhimento dos Orfãos

Built in terreiro de São Lázaro, second the stroke of master António Pereira, the work of the Recoil of the orphan girls was built between 1724 and 1743. In 1746, is initiated the construction of the Church, according to assigned project, for some, the Nasoni. The interior features several altarpieces in talha, of Baroque style.

Capela de Nossa Senhora da Silva

This chapel exists since the XV century and, at the façade, a curious XVIII century niche stands out, with the images of Nossa Senhora da Silva, São João Baptista and São Baldomero. Gay colours appear at the windows and doors.

Estátua da Rosália de Castro

This monument, by Barata Feyo, is at the Praça da Galiza. Open in 1954, it is a tribute to the Galician poetess, cut in stone, framed in a gardened scenario.

Monumento aos Heróis da Guerra Peninsular

This construction began in 1912. After some time of inactivity, it was concluded by the sculptures Henrique Moreira and Sousa Caldas. On top of the 45 meters height granite column, you can see a lion, symbolizing Portugal, dominating an eagle, Napoleon’s symbol. On the columns’ lower part there two sculptures of the Generals Sepúlveda and Silveira. At the bottom of the monument there’s a representation of the “Victory” leading the troops and the people and the “Barcas Disaster”.
