It is considered the most beautiful street in the centre of Porto. It was opened in 1521 by King Dom Manuel I, was then called Rua de Santa Catarina das Flores and was the main road that connected the upper part of the city with the riverside area. Whoever enters this street notices the difference with the other streets. It has a nineteenth-century, bourgeois aspect, surrounded by typical two and three-storey buildings, with characteristic windows and iron balconies. This street, dated from 1844, was very hard to build because of the granite existent there. It connects the Cordoaria Garden with the Cais de Massarelos, going through the picturesque Largo do Viriato. In the middle of the way you may enjoy the beautiful view over the Douro River.

The fountain has a dolphin as its main ajutage. On both sides of the dolphin are two flowers which are also ajutages. It was repaired in 1941. The tank is semi-circular.

This building is one of the finest examples of the end of Middle Ages’ civil architecture. It is a gothic building from the XIV or XV century, characterized by two beautiful ogival doors. It is one of the biggest buildings in the area and has elements from several periods, witnessing a big historical density.

This beautiful house is placed on a street known for its characteristic architectonic harmony. Here are represented the XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries, with a nice show of the Porto’s architectonic atmosphere. On this building, the façade covered with azulejos panels from the second half of the XVII century stands out. This azulejos (tiles), made in Lisbon, describe episodes of the Holy Mary’s life.

Big battlemented house built in 1688, placed at the corner with the Outeirinho Street. This fine building, from the end of the medieval period, was an object of excellent recovery, and is, nowadays, a day-care centre for elder people.

The building at the Galeria de Paris Street was built in 1906. Its façades is Art Nouveau style covered with azulejos (tiles). The decoration in ashlar masonry and the unusual circular window that overlays the portal stand out. This circular window is dived in three parts, of glass and iron, and is at the first floor.

The hazard of this monument, dated from 1934, is due to a corporative administration’s politics. When the Portuguese administration was colonizing territories, especially those in Africa, exhibitions were made and, through them, decorative elements were created – this is an example.

Azulejos painting offered by the painter Júlio Resende to the Porto city. In this painting you can see the life, the Ribeira colours along 54m. It was open in 1987 and its name is Ribeira Negra (Dark Ribeira).
