Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo

This is a former masculine monastery founded on the 12th century by the Order of Cister. It is composed by the church with a plan in Latin cross, three naves and the main chapel. It still conserves the three naves church, typically Cistercian, the Chapter Room and the dormitories. On the interior it stands out the altarpiece in National style. It underwent several remodelling work on the 17th, 18th and 19th century.

Dom Dinis ordered these walls and the castle construction, composed by creneled walls, turrets, an enormous keep, ditches and barbican. In 1580 during the Filipe’s occupation, the castled underwent several damages. The castle still preserves thirteen turrets and three doors; one of them is Traição (Betrayal) door. One should point out the square turret, the Palace Cristóvão de Moura ruins and the urban agglomerate inside the fence.

Residential granite tower placed on the VX century. It is composed by a square plant with terraces established in corbels. The work on the building conducted afterwards has established a link to the attached solar.

The outer wall, in a semicircular shape, surrounded the medieval village and the so-called Castelo Velho. Today, only the remains of the castle with four turrets and a door, the ruins of the Church of São Tiago, built in the 14th century, and the Palace of the Mayors remain. The Castle is a unique viewpoint of the Guadiana River, the village, the salt pans and vast horizons of the sea.
