Marvão

An imposing defensive complex located in a location of great panoramic beauty. Most of the castle's buildings date from 1226 and 1230. It was modified and expanded in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. During the reign of King Dinis, bastions, walls, and forts were built. From the reconstruction, only the keep and some sections of the wall remain.

This is the most important testimony to the Roman presence in the Portalegre District. The remains found here belong to the Roman city of Ammaia. Of note is the Monumental Ensemble of the Porta do Arco, which features the bases of two towers that flanked a city entrance, the threshold of the gate, and a paved public square. Also, noteworthy are the structure of the Forum and Temple, and the Quinta do Deão Building, where a pavement, a water pipe, and inscribed stones were found. Also, noteworthy are the Forum Bathhouse and the Theater.

This church features a portico with four undecorated ogival archivolts on its main façade. It is the only Franciscan convent in Marvão. At the top of the portico is a window surmounted by the Franciscan symbol and flanked by Rococo decoration. The cloister still features an ogival section and 17th-century archways. Noteworthy are the 18th-century tilework.

Mértola

A mining complex established in the 19th century to exploit a copper-bearing pyrite mine whose deposit had been exploited in Roman and pre-Roman times. The main elements extracted during modern mining, between 1854 and 1966, were copper and sulfur. After the mine's closure, the equipment was dismantled and sold, leaving the landscape today marked by mining activity and acid drainage.
