After the Mondego, this is the second-longest Portuguese river. It rises in the Serra da Estrela, at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters, and stretches for 242 km. Its main tributaries are the Nabão and Alge rivers, as well as the Isna, Paul, Bogas, Pera, and Unhais streams. It flows into Constância. Thanks to its water potential, flow, steepness, and rocky banks, it has been used for electricity generation.

In this depression, nicknamed Lagoa de Minde, the lake is larger in winter, thanks to underground galleries that overflow with water. A mixed dam, part gravity and part arch, fed by the Rabagão River, belonging to the Cávado River Basin. Completed in 1964, it stands 94 meters high and 1,897 meters long at the crest, with a maximum discharge capacity of 500 m3/s. It is the second-largest dam in Portugal, after the Alqueva Dam, and is highly sought after by fishermen. Other sports and leisure activities, such as surfing and motorboating, are also permitted.
